| Name: | Edward |
|---|
Character Name: Edward (also known as Ted Forrester and/or The Undertaker and/or Death)
Series: Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter novels
Version: N/A
Timeline: Right after Guilty Pleasures
Age: In his late twenties or early thirties – it’s never specified
Gender: Male
Race/Species: Human
Sexuality: Straight, bordering on asexual.
Appearance: Edward stands at about 5’8”, with straw-blond hair cropped close to his head and ice-blue eyes that betray nothing – no empathy, no emotion, and at his most merciless, no soul. He has a strongly-built body – he’s no bodybuilder by any stretch of the imagination, but one only need look at him to know he can definitely hold his own. He favors simple clothing – plain t-shirts, jeans, sturdy shoes, and of course a duster. It may look casual, but the sheer number of weapons that can be hidden in such an outfit is staggering.
All in all, Edward’s appearance is simply unremarkable. This is, of course, exactly what he wants. A bounty hunter shouldn’t stand out in the crowd, after all.
Personality: Edward is the dictionary definition of “sociopath.” He is smart and coolly efficient, but at the same time has a (rarely seen) sarcastic sense of humor and an immense enjoyment of the thrill of the hunt. It’s the reason he became a bounty hunter, and it’s the reason he stopped hunting humans and moved on to vampires and werewolves (after a while, ordinary humans became boring). Though he’s in his chosen vocation for the hunt, he can’t deny that he takes a certain pleasure in an efficient kill - satisfaction of a job well done.
There are two main points to remember about Edward. The first is that, true to his sociopathic nature, he has no conscience. He feels no sympathy, no empathy, and no remorse, making him an excellent bounty hunter. He believes that anything that isn’t human (vampires, lycanthropes, zombies, the list goes on) is a monster, and if you pay him well enough he’ll put it down for you, no problem.
The second point is that he is an amazing actor. He can easily fool passerby, law enforcement officials, and most anybody who doesn’t know him well that he is Ted Forrester, his one legal identity and a New Mexican “good ol’ boy,” complete with huge, sincere smile and cowboy hat. He’ll smile, he’ll flirt, he’ll be the nicest man you could ever hope to meet, but none of it is ever real, and the second he drops the Ted persona you’ll know it.
Abilities/Strengths: Edward is human, and therefore lacks any special or supernatural abilities. What he lacks in raw power, however, he makes up for in intelligence and tactics. Edward knows more about weapons than Rambo and does not hesitate to put this knowledge to good use. In addition to knowing which weapons are best for a job, he’s customized weaponry for his arsenal, from arms as simple to sawed-off shotguns to complicated pieces such as a mini-Uzi that can fit in a Jeep tire well. He also makes his own powerful bullets.
Edward also has what are colloquially known as street smarts in abundance. He lacks the super strength and healing ability of the monsters he hunts, and so he has learned how to avoid or counter such abilities. He is highly observant, picking up details that others might glance over, and can quickly and accurately not only assess a scene but react accordingly.
Quite frankly, the man knows all there is to know about bounty hunting. He can plan, he can track, and he knows and can perform hundreds upon hundreds of ways to quickly and efficiently kill a person. As far as fighting skills go, he’s no master of hand-to-hand combat, but he knows enough both to defend himself and to kill. He has mastered every weapon he has ever carried, to include a wide array of firearms, blades, and even a garrote.
Weapons: Edward rarely goes out without a veritable arsenal on his person (though most of it is concealed behind, beneath, or within his clothing). He’s been known to wield anything from a garrote to an Uzi, but for this game his weaponry will be a bit more limited than usual (sorry, Edward, no flamethrower). The weapons he currently has on his person are:
Beretta M9 Pistol: This is Edward’s main weapon, a military-issue semiautomatic pistol with a high rate of fire and accuracy. It holds 15 bullets per cartridge (sixteen if you’re confident or crazy enough to keep one in the gun itself, which Edward does on occasion) and tends to be lighter than most handguns. Edward has long since mastered this one.
Seecamp LWS 32: A compact six-shot pistol meant to be fired in close range, the LWS 32 model is chambered for hollow-point bullets only, which suits Edward’s tastes (not to mention his customized bullets) just fine.
Derringer .38 Special: A very small two-shot pistol that tends to be a last resort but nonetheless packs a very powerful punch. This gun has more stopping power than most six or seven-shot model pistols.
All of Edward’s guns have double-action triggers, which cock and fire the gun in a single pull of the trigger. (A single-action trigger requires the gun to be cocked by hand before the trigger is pulled.)
Customized bullets: Colloquially known as Edward Specials, these are Edward’s bullet of choice, personally customized for maximum damage. To create these, Edward fills Hollow point bullets with holy water and liquid mercury and seals them with wax. They pack enough power to rip a human or minor vampire to shreds and cause the stronger beings quite a bit of pain (not to mention depriving them of a limb or two). These bullets would normally be loaded into the Seecamp or the Derringer, but may also be used in the Beretta in particularly dangerous or bloody situations.
Darts: Worn in a pocket that can easily be attached to a shoulder holster, belt, or nearly anywhere, Edward’s silver darts are small (two inches long at best). Their small size and number (only twenty or so) make them the tamest weapon in Edward’s arsenal, meant to distract or cause distracting or nonfatal damage (while a dart in the eye isn’t fatal, it certainly is distracting). They can also be dipped into all sorts of nasty substances for greater effect.
Weaknesses: Edward’s greatest weakness is simply the fact that he is human. He is oftentimes smaller, slower, and weaker than the monsters he hunts, and that does catch up to him. He’s received some pretty nasty wounds before and nearly been killed several times (which is the reason he rarely if ever goes into a multiple-target hunt without backup). He can be outwitted, taken by surprise, hurt, and killed – all of which can be difficult to do, but are doable nonetheless.
His sociopathy is a weakness to a much lesser degree when it comes to emotional situations. His acting skills step in, and he can act the appropriate emotion, even if he doesn’t feel it. Only the most observant of people would be able to call him on this.
History: Most of Edward’s past is completely shrouded in mystery, to the point where we’re not even sure Forrester is his last name. All that is known for certain about his less recent past is that he worked under and trained with a man named Van Cleef, and was only allowed to leave his employ under the condition that he tell no one what happened during the time he spent with the man, a condition Edward has faithfully upheld.
Living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Edward only travels to Saint Louis for a change of pace or a particularly intriguing hunt, oftentimes for both. During one of his earliest partnerships with vampire hunter Anita Blake, he used a flamethrower to wipe out a nest of vampires and disappeared before the law arrived.
More recently, he once again traveled to Saint Louis on a job: to kill the Master of the City, a fifteen-hundred-year old vampire with the body of a little girl and the name of Nikolaos. Once again, he found himself teamed up with Anita, and between the two of them they managed to kill not only Nikolaos but her strongest and most loyal circle: about six vampires, all very old and powerful, and all in one night.
It was not without repercussions, of course. Edward walked away from that battle with a broken arm and a nasty bite. He’d only just recovered and returned to Santa Fe when he found himself in a room he didn’t know, facing a hologram of a man he didn’t recognize. Not the sort of welcome he’d want anywhere, least of all Unreal.
